One of my favourite Modern Art Museums in Nice
One of my favourite modern art museums in Nice and surrounding areas is The Fondation Maeght. I love to take family and friends. It’s a visual feast for the eyes, in fact all the senses, as nature and art come together. I never seem to tire of its beautiful setting, the design of the building itself and of course the artworks that adorn its gardens, walls and quiet nooks.

Not far from Nice and open every day – its unique architectural complex was created to showcase contemporary and modern art in all its forms. Built in 1964 by André Malraux, the foundation was formed along with Aimé Maeght, an art dealer and gallery owner in Paris. Painters and sculptors include Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder, Fernand Leger, Alberto Giacometti, Georges Braque and Eduardo Chillida.

On my last visit, I noticed new artwork in the garden. Large dark burnt sculptures. I questioned whether they had been damaged somehow. Quickly, I realised they were intentionally burnt by the artist Lee Bae. He currently exhibiting at the complex until the 17th June.

Lee Bae’s work is a fusion of western abstract art and traditional artistic practices of Korean culture. By using fire and charcoal and the use of the colour black, he presents his idea of nature. Shown in striking contrast on white, his paintings hang inside the foundation. In particular, I love this monochrome painting shown below. And his wooden murals project a striking 3D architectural effect. Such a tactile textural body of work.

Now, to a few of my favourite art-works which reside here. I’m always drawn to the world famous Giacometti courtyard. His tall male bronze male sculptures always remind me of my late father. He has captured his profile and elegance in these beautiful works of art.

Finally, Set in the Labyrinth sculpture gardens, are two characters guaranteed to always bring a smile to my face. Firstly, we have Miró’s very famous, fun little Alien. Perhaps Steven Spielberg was a former visitor here, and took some inspiration for ET? Secondly is this white and red smiling art-work again by Joan Miró. Full of personality!
