In Food, Lifestyle, Local knowledge, Shopping

This month in our guide to Cannes – we share some of our favourite places (and people) in the best market stalls and go-to shops around central Cannes for food & drink, tried and most definitely tasted!

As in our work, it comes very naturally to seek out the very finest wine, cafes, flowers and gastronomy, our local area has to offer. And who doesn’t love a stroll around a food market at the weekend? Nothing beats ambling around the markets with family or loved ones – tasting new delights and shopping for lunch (see the final feast at the end of this blog).

Well, we say, amble away, but make sure to find time to visit our top food spots in the markets and around Cannes – all within walking distance.

Forville Market

Open daily 7am-1pm (Tues-Sat)
Mondays (flea market)

Located near Cannes’ historic Le Suquet, a stroll up the Rue Gazagnaire (nearly opposite the bus station) will lead you to straight to the pedestrianised market area. Here, you will find a spectrum of colour from the vegetables, fruit and flower stalls, set amongst the finest cheeses, meats and spices (worth a visit for the aromas alone!). A specialist hardware stall, English butcher and the locally famous seafood stall all line the outside of the market and are all worth a look. But don’t forget to make time to sample the oysters, along with a glass of champagne of course…

Café L’Horloge (Forville Market)

This is our first destination on a lazy weekend morning before heading into market. Their breakfast offerings of fresh pastries, croissants and good quality coffee are all served by warm and friendly staff. Perfect spot for people watching.

Cave Forville (Forville Market)

Like a good library, all the classics are here but you can also discover new wines with friendly and knowledgeable advice. From this family-run business, expect service with a smile as you enjoy an oyster, salmon or charcuterie board to accompany your glass (or bottle) of choice. They are a must.

Gambetta Market

(Open 7am-1pm)
(Closed Mon in winter)

A short walk past the railway station heading east – and along the rue Jean Jaures will lead to Place Gambetta. This undercover market is a food haven but also a great haunt for fashionistas. Vintage and new clothing, jewellery, shoes and leather goods can be found here. Check out the bars and restaurants close by – perfect to soak in the atmosphere. For a great selection of shops, head towards the pedestrianised rue Hoche, just off the square. Here and in nearby rue Marceau, you can also discover an Asian supermarket, Kosher stores, deli’s, butchers and fantastic wine shops.

Angelina Arfuso Place (Gambetta Market)

(Open daily except Mon)

Simply put, our favourite florist. Angelina grows her flowers in Golfe Juan and picks them herself. Her seasonal flowers are the most beautiful around and hold all week. Her beaming smile and infectious personality keep us coming back time after time.

The Organic Vegetable stall (Gambetta Market)

My English friends tell me that the fruit and vegetables in France taste incredible – like nothing they have ever tasted in the UK (especially our tomatoes). I wonder if this Forville market stall is helping along that reputation. Nathalie and Helen run this delightful organic fruit and veg stall, which keeps Cannes’ local restaurants fully stocked with ingredients. They are always happy to share seasonal mouth-watering recipes for vegetarians and vegans.

Central Cannes

Le Fromager Gourmet (8, Rue des Halles)

Not just a cheesemaker – a talented cheese & food artist if the displays are anything to go by. Brie with truffles (as shown here), 12-year-old Comte cheese and Bordier butter rub shoulders with delicious goats cheese and hard cheeses.

Be sure to try the Brie!

Marcellino Bakery/Julien Boutros (45, rue Hoche)

(open daily 8 am – 9 pm)

After many years of tasting bread from bakeries all over Cannes, (oh, the hardship!) – I think I have finally found the best. The bread is simply delicious. The Marcellion bakery is owned by Julien Boutros, a finalist of the 2016 best baker. He also won the prize of the best baguette in Paris and luckily for us, he recently moved to Cannes. His knowledge paired with traditional methods of baking is second to none. Look no further.

Caprice des Mers (3, Rue Chabaud)

(open daily, closed Mon)

Located in Suquet, at the top of the pedestrianised area, this fishmonger has become a local institution for fish and seafood. The owner’s son runs a well-renowned restaurant by the same name in this father and son family run business.

I’m surprised most of the food made it back to my kitchen as it smelt and tasted so good… Lunch is finally served.

Dressing your table – Style Tip

When food is all about quality and simplicity, so should be your approach to dressing your dining table. It should be understated (let the food be the decoration) but with the right amount of design detail. Here, we used simple striped cotton table-mats by Linum, mismatched coloured glasses from Villeroy et Bosh and ceramic plates from Astier de Villatte. All available to order from our showroom here.
