Need vintage interior design inspiration?
This vintage printing tray, (from the magical Mr Magpie) was originally used in the early 19th century to house individual letter stamps. For me, it really sums up the very British Brighton, where I visited recently, and the kind of vintage interior design inspiration you can find here. Colourful, eclectic, diverse, fun, individual, multi-cultural and unexpected. This tray is perfect to store and showcase all your treasures. You could also hang it on a wall in a kitchen – for keys, stamps and other small collectables. A mini art gallery if you like.

Two very unique interior shops in the north laines, (and both well worth a visit) are located close to each other. The first is the divine ‘Vine street Vintage’. I discovered these gems (pictured above) in their basement. I love the way the dark walls contrast against the raw and simple farmhouse interior style. The rust and ageing seen here is an essential part of the look. These antique wooden ladders (shown above), can be placed in a bathroom to hang towels. A clever space saving idea.
The other unmissable shop is ‘Digs’ where they sell neon signs, unusual taxidermy and gorgeous lighting. More about them on my next Brighton based blog when I focus on vintage lighting and lamps.

Whilst having a spot of lunch at the delightful Grow 40 (French & English bistro), I walked upstairs (to take a look at their roof terrace) and found this happy discovery. A wonderful bar and seating area which serves cocktails with an American prohibition theme.
In a different setting, their selection of old armchairs, small Victorian tables and old lampshades would not usually work together so well. Perhaps in need of restoration and recovering. But as you can see here, it works beautifully. Their show-stopping bar above is made out of old wardrobe drawers. And the bar top has over a hundred 2 pence coins set inside it. A wonderful example of what upcycling, restoration and a bit of creative thinking can do.

Just down the road from Digs is the wonderfully exotic Yashar Bish. A store selling carpets and kilims from Asia and the Middle East, plus tribal textiles and cushions. I love their tiles. In particular, the one shown here (above, left) with the green birds. A few of these mixed in with plain colours behind a bathroom sink would add an original touch. I bought one of their beautiful tribal necklaces in a deep red. Good prices too.

You can stumble across some gorgeous finds down at the North Laine Antique and Flea Market. A labyrinth of stalls over two floors including a plant shop. I love these ‘Mad Men’ 50’s style velvet chairs in beautiful gold and green. And these elegant glass soda water bottles are the perfect partner for the cocktail bar.

Jungle prints are still currently having their fashion moment in the interior world. What I like about these cushions (above) is that they have been made from vintage fabric. This adds more authenticity to a current trend. Spotted in the wonderful stall just left of the entrance.
Finally, worth noting is a fantastic stall downstairs near the plant shop. It has a wide selection of round mirrors and upcycled industrial filing cabinets. Some great finds to discover here.
I hope you enjoyed my vintage interior design inspiration tour – I have detailed the addresses of all the shops I visited here below. Brighton is on the coast and only an hour south of London by train. Well worth a visit.
