Interior Design Trends
It was a beautiful day in Paris when I recently attended the Maison & Objet 2018 show. Pia, Caroline and myself can be found here twice a year, circuiting the aisles of the vast exhibition space. Always on the look-out for new trends and products. Over 3000 exhibitors from 64 countries showcase their latest homeware collections here. No stranger to the fair, (I’ve been a regular for many years) – it still excites me to discover the latest home & decor innovations & trends. Here are my 6 show highlights for top interior design trends at Maison & Objet Paris 2018.

1. Nature’s Gift
Tables, baskets and decor let nature do the talking as the interior design trends for all things natural continues. Clever design that is functional and beautiful also proved popular. Seen here in this wonderful wooden table (above) which doubles up as a backgammon board. I love that the designer has kept the wood in its glorious natural form. Knots and all. Game on.

2. A Vintage Year
Modern furniture designers are still re-visiting classic design and updating it for the modern world. The 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s are era’s in interior design trends which keep coming back, year after year. And for very good reason. Classic beautiful design. The Paris fair was no different and both these chairs ticked all three boxes. Made from superior woven fabrics and crafted to perfection.

3. Light me up
Lighting can evoke such a wide range of emotions. A desk-top spotlight helps channel our focus for work. A brightly lit kitchen can help bring a buzz to dinner preparations, and a dimmed candlelight setting can bring out our romantic side. Personally, I’m in favour of mood-enhancing, soft ambient style lighting such as these (above). These stunning lights and lamps (above) were my top picks for Paris. And if you missed my last blog about vintage lighting check it out here.

4. Circular Tables
Two tables which caught my eye were both circular in design. A space-saving shape which not only mixes up a layout in a living room but also provides the perfect focal point. The nestle of marble tables (at top) reaffirms the ‘au natural’ trend – extending into contemporary table design. Stunning markings. The second table, also contemporary in design, has a real artisan aesthetic. The engraved ethnic patterns in the metal top are beautiful. And the wrought iron base provides a sturdy base.

5. All Washed Up
Bedding, cushions, curtains and even table cloths in washed out natural linens are given a new muted colour palette. Soon to be seen in stores from next year, I expect. The softer, more neutral tones of pewter, stone and off-white for me, seemed more directional for 2019. This naturally dishevelled look can give bedlinen etc. a ‘lived in’ authentic look. A nice touch if everything else in the bedroom looks carefully considered.

6. Contemporary Stars of The Show
My three standout contemporary finds at this year’s show. First, we have this elegant chaise-lounge finely upholstered in on-trend colours; plum and mustard. The leather belt detail is imaginative yet functional. Next, this pod-like desk (on left) which comes with built-in shelves and lighting. Not only does it occupy very little space (it flaps up when not in use), it simply draws you in. Lastly, we have a Miro (the artist) style chair which wouldn’t look out of place in an art gallery. I love the oversize design and luxurious leather padding.
I wonder if any of my Maison & Objet interior design trends highlights make it into our projects soon? – watch this space…
Till next time,
Geraldine & Pia xx
