Color of the Year

Every year in December the color experts at Pantone research into art, film, fashion, food, materials, technology, sport and culture, which results in the color of the year. This year in 2018, the Pantone color is 18-3838 otherwise known as Ultra violet.

I understand the wide spectrum and variation of even just one color through working with color every day. Color has an effect visually and emotionally when used in the home.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said: “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 ultra violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level.

“The Pantone color of the year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”

Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.

Using Ultra Violet in the Home

When it comes to decoration and the using ultra violet tones in the home – this color can help bring a sense of luxury, creativity or mindfulness depending on how you use it.

  • Historically, hues of purple have been long associated with royalty and wealth. So by using rich velvets on sofas or chairs in a historical or classical style building can add a sense of luxury and decadence.

  • For modern creative spaces, lighter tones of ultra violet mixed with industrial inspired furniture, offers a more forward-thinking, inventive and inspiring space.

  • Emotional associations with purple tones, such as compassion and understanding, can be a perfect hue for a painted wall, outside in a courtyard full of plants and trees. The perfect spot to relax and be mindful.

I’m currently researching fabrics for a project, looking into tones of purple for different rooms in an apartment which led me to write this blog.

Like I mentioned at the start, there are so many variations of one color and ultra violet is no exception. Perhaps, a light fitting with a violet bulb would best showcase this color which is rooted in light.

I must admit that in the office, looking through all these fabrics (which all stem from this beautiful, mystical ultra violet tone) a sense of calm has been brought to a normally very busy office!

Till next time,
