Food and Drink Guide

Avoid hotel bars for this year’s festival and live like a local

If you are like me, (well, we are birds of a feather after all!) when I visit a city, for work or pleasure – I want to avoid the tourist spots and seek out where the locals eat and drink. After all, they say local knowledge is king. So here is my Cannes film festival food and drink guide for 2019.

From my office window, I can see preparations are underway for this years’ Cannes Film festival 2019. This years’ dates run from 14th-25th May – so, for this blog, I’m going to share with you my go-to local places to eat and drink. Perfect off-piste destinations to enjoy during the film festival.

A selection of new and old hidden gems – celebrated locally for their produce, specialities, and ambience. I’m happy to add that the décor ain’t too shabby either!

Enjoy! and share with your loved ones – just, maybe not with everyone ok?

1. Maison Charlotte Busset

26 Rue Hoche, Cannes – Open every day 7am-7pm

First of all, let’s talk décor. Two words come to mind. Simply beautiful. Flowers, peacocks and velvet surround this tea room whilst cookies are served to you in mini bird cages. Their now legendary cookies are what the locals flock here for and they don’t disappoint. Healthy options are covered here too but make sure to taste the gourmands. Delicious. A match made in heaven for the Instagram generation. Don’t forget to eat! (as well as post).

2. Noväa

3 Rue des Frères Casanova, Cannes – Open Tues – Sat dawn til dusk

Cannes’ first ever ethical vegan restaurant. And bound to be a sure-fire hit at this year’s film festival for Hollywood’s health-focused foodies. In keeping with their ethos; authentic and responsible, Noväas’ décor is simple and modern with an emphasis on all things natural. The restaurant itself is built from recycled terracotta brick. A colour also used in their décor and branding. For us locals, wanting to grab a quick healthy bite over lunch – it’s a much-welcomed addition to our neighbourhood.

3. Bobo

21 Rue Commandant André, (open 12-4pm, 7pm-12am Closed Sunday’s)

Bobo Bistro is well known by locals for their quality produce and creative dishes.
I love the colourful eclectic style of this restaurant where butterfly’s, cotton yarns and flower murals adorn the walls. Now, most important of all, I can confirm that the food is as good as it looks! – I ate (picture below): Tagliata de boeuf à la truffe, roquette et parmesan. Pia ate: Cabillaud roti, puree et legumes de saison, sauce vierge de tomatoes. An old favourite of mine and Pia’s and bound to become yours too.

4. Le Vintage

5 Rue Victor Cousin & 45 Croisette, Cannes

You will not be surprised to hear that Gaël, the owner has a passion for all things vintage. This sense of style is showcased in their wonderful bar and eatery in central Cannes. Well known by locals for their cocktails – they pre-dry all the fruit for a truly distinctive taste. Make sure to order their oysters to accompany your cocktail. A winning combination. See you there!

5. Aperitiv

12 Rue Teisseire, Cannes Open Mon-Fri 10am-1pm, 3.30pm -7.30pm Sat 10-1pm 2.30pm-7.30pm

The popularity of Airbnb and hosting at home has assured that Aperitiv is onto a winner. All under one roof, their Cannes store (two also in Nice) boasts a wide range of charcuterie, cheese, antipasti, olives, dried fruits, spreads, terrines, wine, spirits and champagne. All at reasonable prices. A big hit with us locals – and no doubt with the film festival crowd, in search of pre-dinner hosting essentials.

6. Quintessence

24 Rue Hoche, Cannes – Open 5pm-1am Mon-Sat

A recent addition to Cannes after setting up their first shop in Grenoble. A warm and friendly wine bar which also serves delicious food (see pictures). Charming sommeliers are on hand to guide you through their wines covering 12 regions of France. There is a terrace (nice for hazy summer evenings) and VIP area to cater for more private gatherings (A-list actors maybe?). On a Friday evening, the terrace is where I am found with a chilled glass of white. Perfect for people watching! – maybe even a few famous faces.

So, there you have it, our Cannes festival food and drink guide. Round up some friends and head over to some of these off-the-grid places. You will not be disappointed.
